Bursting into the psychedelic rock, underground music scene this year is American band ‘Sunflower bean’. The threesome grew up in Brooklyn, incorporating themselves into the local music scene at a young age, being regular gig attenders. The band consists of vocalist and bassist Julia Cummings, who also makes a no less than casual living from being face of Yves Saint Laurent, Nick Kivlen, vocalist and guitarist, and Jacob Faber, the drummer.
Adding to the army of new bands materialising with an ever strengthening female presence including the likes of Wolf Alice, Superfood, Cherry Glazerr, and Black Honey, they make a strong point of reiterating their love for music whilst claiming the massive part it plays in their lives. “Life would be really depressing [without it], it gives us purpose!”. Within their music, especially the new single I Hear Voices heralds a tinge of nostalgia, connoting old school, new wave rock from years back. Their latest EP Show Me Your Seven Secrets, which was released the other month on Fat Possum, has propelled the band to perform a series of gigs at The Great Escape in Brighton, opening for Best Coast in Europe and also a London residency at the Lexington.
With the likes of NME actively propounding them and fans appearing seemingly all the time at their live shows, Sunflower Bean are one of the most exciting new bands around and their sound is perpetually developing.
