EP Review: Gertrudis / MOURN

Barcelona-based quartet of young punks Mourn released their exceptional self-titled debut album earlier this year and have wasted no time in following it up with new three track 7” EP Gertrudis.

Gertrudis is a raw and edgy compilation which, along with their impressive debut, proves Mourn are a band to watch in 2015 alongside their Spanish counterparts The Parrots and Hinds. The title track Gertrudis, Get Through This! is a brazen, high-energy rocker with an impossible not to shout along chorus of, shockingly, ‘Gertrudis, get through this!’ The track kicks the EP off impeccably with a blend of Carla Pérez Vas’ raucous vocals and upbeat summery riffs fitting of their Mediterranean hometown.

The second track on the EP Your Face is storming and full of attitude, with the shout of ‘you know that I can’t stand your face’ giving an edge of teenage-riot. Concluding with Salvador it’s a similarly emphatic track to the others, if slightly more mellow-sounding, and brings Gertrudis to an brilliant end being the only song in the band’s native Spanish.

Gertrudis can now be streamed via Spotify and is to be released on 7” vinyl this summer, which also sees Mourn embarking on their first international tour; check out dates below.
