The return of Oxford rockers Foals has been highly anticipated to say the least – the five piece have been relatively quiet since 2013’s brilliant Holy Fire. Now, much to the delight of their army of fans, Foals are back with a vengeance. As album number four What Went Down edges ever closer, teaser tracks are generating a huge buzz, the second of which, Mountain At My Gates, being the latest dazzling offering.
While Mountain At My Gates is not quite as massive as the approaching album’s title track What Went Down, it definitely has a stadium sized quality that pitches it with the likes of Inhaler in terms of magnitude. The track combines the scuzzy and the melodic, carried by a pulsating drum beat and lively guitars. The implementation of a variety of different sounds creates an almost tropical influence at points, and the anthemic chorus, driven by Yannis Philippaki’s strong vocals, will be circulating your head for days. The true highlight of the track, however, is the high impact finale – a frantic combination of frenetic drums and impressive riffs finishes Mountain At My Gates off in a way that will leave you mouthing “wow.”
Mountain At My Gates is further proof that Foals are back at their best and we, along with many others, cannot wait to see what else they have in store.
