Track Review: Baby Ain’t Made Of China / Wolf Alice

What a year it’s been for Wolf Alice. With numerous festival spots, preparation for a soon to commence UK tour, and the release of what is possibly one of the most highly acclaimed debut albums of all time, the band have certainly stormed onto everybody’s radars over the past few months. Just when you thought they couldn’t possibly impress you anymore, this week saw the four-piece drop a brand new track, Baby Ain’t Made of China.

The track is set to form the B-side to You’re A Germ, the band’s most recent release from My Love Is Cool, and is pretty different to its raucous counterpart. Getting off to a rather demure start, Baby Ain’t Made of China opens in hypnotic fashion; there’s a laid back beat and the ever celestial vocals of Ellie Rowsell are haunting from the off. The pace soon picks up though, as the sweet croon turns into somewhat of a shout and a scuzzy blend of punchy guitars send the track to a positively anthemic size, the cherry on top of which is the shout-along line of “oh love me make me better.”

Baby Ain’t Made of China is proof that Wolf Alice have by no means exhausted their songwriting talent – combining the hypnotic and the grungy, the band have once again produced an anthem, and I for one can’t wait to see what else they have to offer in the hopefully near future. In the meantime, it’s in your best interests to catch them on their UK tour – dates below.
